Korea University’s (KU) Graduate School of Law and Germany’s Konrad Adenauer Foundation, and Constitutional Academic & Professional Association (CAPA) are co-hosting the Korea-Germany International Symposium on September 16 to 18 in honor of the 70th anniversary of the independence as well as the division of Korea.

The symposium is an opportunity to bring together hands-on personnel who actually worked to structure East Germany’s legal system and social security system at the time of Germany’s historical reunification and listen to their experience with reunification. The symposium will be hosted at KU’s Centennial Memorial SAMSUNG Hall and LG-POSCO Business Hall and Korean-German simultaneous interpretation will be provided.

The first day, which is on September 16, will feature symposium on the topic of ‘Freedom and Reunification—Nationwide Reunification and Constitution’s Democratic Legitimacy.’ On the next day, the symposium will be on the topic of ‘Reunification of Germany and Reunification of Korea—Unification and Welfare.’ On the last day, a discussion on the current status of the political freedom of German and Korean citizens will be dealt with on the topic of ‘Political Freedom and Political System.’

Upon the symposium, KU personnel commented, “By taking from Germany’s past experience of reunification, this symposium will be an opportunity for us to ponder about how the reunification can be realized in Korea and what we have to do in order for it to happen, as well as recognize that reunification is a duty that needs to be fulfilled.”
