[NEWS] KU Overcomes Limitations of Slot-Die Coating

Korea University’s (KU) research team, led by Professor Im Sang Hyuk (Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering) has found a breakthrough regarding Slot-Die Coating, presenting revolutionary research for perovskite solar cells. Slot-die coating is a manufacturing method that applies a thin layer of liquid material onto a substrate. This is an essential process to produce efficient and cost-effective perovskite solar cells compared to traditional silicon ones. The main challenge, however, was that on a larger scale, slot-die coating had difficulties distributing the material into an even layer. In solar cell production, even slight variations in the layer’s thickness can lead to inconsistent performance.

The study provides a solution by experimenting with poly-triarylamine (PTAA), an effective semiconductor that helps move electrical charges and is used for the Hole Transporting Layer (HTL) in perovskite solar cells. By oxidizing PTAA, its electron mobility and wettability increase, overcoming its hydrophobic nature, and allowing the application of a uniform thin layer that enhances perovskite solar cell production. This research was published in the scientific journal *Joule* on March 6, 2025. Solving key challenges in large-area fabrication brings the industry closer to developing durable, cost-effective renewable energy solutions. This advancement in solar technology underscores KU’s leadership in sustainable energy innovation.
