By Mariana Sotelo (2021230072@korea.ac.kr)

Student-designed majors represent a chance that Korea University (KU) offers its students to create their own personalized curriculum. The steps involved in the application process remain difficult to uncover, which may deter potential applicants. However, if successful, the degree designed by the student could be officially recognized by the school as a second major and later included in the student’s graduation certificate.

Applications take place during the second month of each semester. Every regular student can apply starting from their sophomore year, whereas transfer students become eligible after one semester of enrolment. Each applicant is assigned a student advisor that will guide them in the design of the curriculum to ensure that all rules are followed. A minimum of 36 credits have to be included in the proposal, stemming from three or more departments, albeit one must be the department of the applicant’s first major.

The application will have to be approved by various committees, the last of them being the Curriculum Deliberation Committee (CDC). While the process might seem challenging, student-designed majors offer an alternative route for students who either wish to specialize in a niche area of studies, or who do not find the current majors available appropriate for their future plans.

*Further information can be found at the KU website or by contacting your department.
