외신에서 기자가 되거나 해외특파원들의 세계에 관심이 있으신 분들에게 좋은 행사가 있어 소개해드리고자 합니다.
국내에서 외신기자가 되는 한국어가 가능한 사람들은 대게 fixer나 stringer 혹은 news assistants 라고 불리는 프리랜서로 처음 돈을 벌며 이쪽 분야에서 일을 시작하게 되는 경우가 많은데요, 이들이 하는 일이 풀타임 기자나 특파원들이 하는 일과 거의 유사함에도 불구하고 (기사 발굴, 취재원 찾기, 인터뷰하기, 인터뷰 약속 잡기, 통역, 번역 등등) 근로계약서나 표준 없이 지인의 소개와 구두계약으로 이뤄지는 일의 특성상, 적당한 급여 수준이나 적절한 업무량 등 정보 공유가 부족한 상황입니다. 때로는 아무것도 모르는 대학생들이 마땅히 받아야하는 기사의 byline이나 contributor line을 받지못하기도 합니다. 특히 평창 올림픽등 국내 큰 행사가 있을 때는 해외에서 오는 기자들로부터 국내 언어가 가능한 fixer 와 stringer 에 대한 수요가 늘어나곤 합니다만 아직 이 분야에서 누가 일하는지 어떻게 하면 더 나은 픽서가 되고 풀타임 기자직으로 이어질 수 있는지, 얼마의 급여를 요청하는게 적당한지 등에 대해서는 정보가 부족합니다.  

The Asian American Journalists Association – Asia Chapter의 서울 회원들은 올해 이런 상황을 개선하고 해외특파원들이 로컬 픽서들과 공정한 환경에서 협업하여 더 나은 보도를 할 수 있도록 하고자합니다. 대부분의 현직 외신기자들은 기자 초기시절 픽서를 한두번 이상 했던 경험이 있습니다. 전현직 베테랑 픽서들을 만나 이들의 경험과 조언, 팁들을 들어보시길 바랍니다.

본행사는 학생증 지참시 무료이며 (피자 제공) 금요일 오후 12시 까지 아래 정보로 참가 신청을 해주시기 바랍니다.

Many native Korean speakers looking to become journalists for esteemed global media outlets start off their careers in journalism assisting a foreign correspondent tasked with covering a story on the Korean Peninsula.

Fixers, also known as stringers or news assistants, are sometimes college students or recent graduates. Their work is little different from what full-time journalists do everyday. They find sources, arrange and translate interviews, fact-check and spend hours making cold calls until they find the right source and get the right quote for a story. They are often the eyes, the ears and the mouth of many foreign correspondents who are new to the region and lack Korean language proficiency.

Yet, few readers and audiences of the international news know of their presence or the indispensable roles that these journalists play in making many stories possible.

The Seoul sub-chapter of the Asian American Journalists Association is hosting our first panel discussion of the year with current and former fixers to hear their perspective on their work and what they have learned in their roles, how they have secured due credit and proper payment, as well as how to get started.

Join the conversation with seasoned fixers and stringers who will help equip future fixers with skills and tips for the job and how to speak up for what you deserve.
