Lee Ufan’s Newest Piece. Provided by Korea University

On May 17, a new statue has been unveiled near the Business School Main Hall on Korea University (KU)’s Seoul Campus. The statue, which is a piece of artwork custom-made by Korean artist Lee Ufan, is called “Relatum-The Location.” Lee is a minimalist artist and a scholar with great impact on both Korean and Japanese art. His works have been exhibited in iconic locations such as the Guggenheim in New York City and the Palace of Versailles. Lee also  recently opened a permeant exhibition hall in France showcasing his works.

Lee attended the ceremony remotely and spoke about the simplicity of his piece, which is composed of a large natural stone and a plate made of stainless steel polished to look like a mirror. Yongwoo Lee, director of Shanghai Himalayas Museum, introduced the piece by describing the way in which the stainless steel plate reflects the sky, making the stars shine on the campus lawn where students go about their daily lives.

“Relatum-The Location” represents the values of the Business School, as well as allows passersby to take a moment out of their day to reflect on the meaning of the art.
