Korea University (KU), having been famous for going through numerous renovations during the recent years, is once again ready to surprise the entire nation by presenting π-Ville. On September 8, KU held a completion ceremony for π-Ville with KU President Yeom Jae Ho and many other officials and authorities from diverse organizations, schools, and departments participating. This is the first time a university in Korea has ever provided space on campus for students to focus on not only their studies but also start-ups, and other autonomous activities.

"π" for π-Ville comes from the word “pioneer,” and is written with a π to symbolize an endless expansion of numbers. The name of the village therefore includes President Yeom’s wish that all KU students will be able to create and pioneer their ideas and potentials without any limits.

The creation of π-Ville was inspired by the idea that a community is incapable of achieving revolutionary innovations with just the information obtained in classes and lectures. President Yeom commented that, “π-Ville was created for fearless KU students who continuously imagine. I would like to nurture students of originality and revolution.”

π-Ville is located at the empty space between the Woodang Hall and the Political Science and Economics building. The first pioneer village, “π-Ville 99,” is made with 38 containers, that altogether make up 15 studios, an auditorium, an open-plan studio, idea café, three-dimensional open-lab, etc. This village is open to anyone of KU and will assist students who seek novel creation in various fields. Those selected as the most enthusiastic and creative will be given their own studios where they can independently work to further develop their ideas.

One feature that distinguishes π-Ville from other organizations or institutions that help students’ start-up businesses, is how they select students for additional support. π-Ville is willing to offer opportunities to students of various fields with diverse activities, such as allowing students to hold exhibitions or sell hand-made crafts, besides starting a new business. π-Ville is also planning to provide students with diverse lectures, educational programs, opportunities to experience mentoring, etc. There is much to expect from this innovative village for pioneers.
