Beginning in the academic year 2025, Korea University (KU) has officially declared its intention to establish a college for undecided majors, with an annual quota of approximately 300 students. Although KU’s School of Interdisciplinary Studies already admits 95 students who can later choose their definite major in the sophomore year, the plan is to quadruple the enrollment limit to create a new liberal arts (non-major) undergraduate college.
This initiative was implemented in accordance with the Ministry of Education’s directive to promote innovation and learning opportunities, offering funding of 441 billion South Korea Won (KRW) to private and national universities that align with this goal. While establishing a new college is not the sole criterion to receive this funding, universities that exceed 25 percent enrollment in liberal majors earn additional points.
Feedback from KU students seems generally positive – “Opening this new college would be beneficial as many highschoolers don’t have the opportunity to contemplate about their future major based on their personal preferences,” mentioned an anonymous student from the Science and Engineering Campus.
