Korea University (KU) recently announced that the school is planning to open a so-called ¡®Language-Brain-Computer (LB&C)¡¯ integrated major course. This decision came as Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been gaining increasing media attention with the world-famous match between Lee Se Dol and Alpha Go—the game of Go between a human and an AI program. This course is designed to integrate linguistics, psychology, and computer engineering altogether.

An official at KU elaborated that ¡°understanding language and brain, which serve as the basis of human intelligence, and integrating it with computer engineering is the core of AI.¡± Four professors from related departments in KU have been assigned to teach the LB&C course. It goes into effect starting this fall semester and the quota is limited to 20 students.

Professor Nam Ho Seong (English Language and Literature) is known to be in charge of designing the course. Also working as a senior researcher at Yale-Haskins Lab in the United States (U.S.), Professor Nam said that South Korea is ¡°seriously lacking in terms of manpower in the field of AI¡±. To address this problem, KU is also planning to build a LB&C research lab on the campus, while encouraging students to study abroad for a more fluid exchange of information.
