On March 30, Korea University (KU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SK Telecom (SKT) in order to transform KU into an ‘Internet of Things (IoT) Campus.’ The new project is named “PI (л) Campus” to represent the abbreviations to “Pioneering Intellectuals,” KU’s slogan, and “Projection of IoTs on the Campus.”

SK Telecom aims to implement high technology infrastructures that can bring about an efficient and convenient campus life. The company first plans to enhance the network infrastructure between KU Anam Campus and KU Anam Medical Center. It also plans to utilize ThingPlug, an IoT platform of SKT to incorporate all the sensor systems within the campus. The system, along with many other plans SKT has revealed, will enable efficient energy management and location positioning.

Seminars and idea proposal competitions on the new IoT system is to be held as well. Whereas current Smart Campuses, a system that enables the use of high-technology in campuses, within the nation tend to provide a unilateral service to students, “PI Campus” is a system that allows students to directly create and modify IoT services.

SKT explained how “PI Campus” is highly praised for its design to utilize IoT and build an autonomous Smart Campus at the same time. “We will make a novel space that incorporates Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and creative collegial culture, in accordance with our motto ‘Pioneering Intellect,’” said Yeom Jae Ho, President of KU.
