The Ministry of Education (MOE) has recently announced a list of Korean universities that were selected to receive subsidies as a part of the so-called ¡°Core Business Program.¡± This initiative was launched to promote the Humanities and Liberal Arts majors by injecting a total of 45 billion won for the duration of three years. ¡°The aim is to accentuate each major¡¯s distinct characteristics and to foster well-rounded individuals,¡± Choi Eun Ock, an official at the MOE, explained.

Out of the 46 schools that applied for this federal grant, only 16 schools were finalized based on a comprehensive evaluation of each school¡¯s proposal as to how it will strengthen the Liberal Arts majors. Korea University (KU) has been allocated the highest amount of subsidy, 3.7 billion won, along with Seoul National University (SNU). The list also includes other prestigious universities like Sogang University (SU) and Hanyang University (HU).

KU is planning to specifically target four majors within the College of Liberal Arts, namely Russian, German, Spanish, and Japanese Language and Literature. The school¡¯s ultimate goal is to increase the students¡¯ chance of employment in these countries by devising a curriculum that is best suited for each country. Some of the specific measures include offering internship opportunities and expanding the Regional Studies.
