Korea University (KU) has announced on March 9 that it has held an official signing ceremony for technology transfers with NKMax, a subsidiary biotechnology company of ATGen. KU Medical Center (KUMC) personnel explained that the agreement dealt with technology transfer regarding the cultivation of Natural Killer (NK) cells as well as medical treatment technologies utilizing these cells.

Yoon Young-Uk, the head of KU Research Management System (KURMS), Lee Hong Shik, the dean of KU College of Medicine, Professor Lee Kyung-Mi of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department of KU College of Medicine, Park Sang-Woo, representative of NKMax, and more attended the signing ceremony.

The technology to be transferred enables the production of billions of NK cells using only a small sample of blood. NK cells track down infected cells or cancer cells and destroy them, making them a viable treatment option. However, according to Professor Lee, the complicated process and expensive costs of production hindered commercialization of these cells.

KUMC personnel further emphasized that the said technology was developed by Professor Lee. At the ceremony, the professor said, ¡°I expect this technology to cut down the costs of cell treatment by about five or 10 times when compared to the previous treatment fees.¡± She added, ¡°Since the cell treatment has shown to have a remedial value, cancer patients who had previously had very little chance of recovering can be greatly helped.¡±
