From November 23 to 26, the College of Liberal Arts of Korea University (KU) will hold a lecture series called the Language Festival. The main purpose of the program is to shed light on the scientific value of language as a subject of interdisciplinary studies.

Language Festival centers on three themes: language, brain, and computing. A total of eight lectures will be held for four days by seven KU professors and one guest speaker from the Louisiana State University.  

On the first day of the lecture series, Professor Shin Jiyoung (Department of Korean Language and Literature) and Professor Lim Heeseok (Department of Computer Science and Engineering) will give a speech on the general concept of language as an interdisciplinary subject. After that, Professor Kim Yunjung (Communication Sciences and Disorders, Louisiana State University) will talk about the Parkinson disease, followed by Professor Nam Hosung’s (Department of English Language and Literature) lecture on deep learning.

Then on the third day, Professor Choi Jiyoun (Department of Psychology) and Professor Kim Jeong-eun (Department of English Language and Literature) will focus on the language development process, and how it affects people’s cognition. Finally, on the last day, Professor Ko Hanseok (Electrical Engineering) will lecture on artificial intelligence, and Professor Nam Kichun (Department of Psychology) will sum up the overall concept of this festival. Kim Hyunseo (’15, Spanish Language and Literature) said, “The festival is particularly intriguing in that it connects language and science, which seem to be two distinct subjects.”
