Professor Kim¡¯s Team¡¯s Paper Published on Journal of Cell Science.

By Kim Yoon Ji (kimyoonji@korea.ac.kr)

A mathematical model that explains the mechanism behind the shaping of a nucleus in a cell was developed by Professor Kim Dong Hwee¡¯s Team (Korea University and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology). ¡°Here, we demonstrate that when an adherent cell is detached from its substratum, the nucleus undergoes a large volumetric reduction accompanied by a morphological transition from an almost smooth to a heavily folded surface,¡± announced Kim¡¯s Team in the summary of their paper.

The team¡¯s paper was published on the cover of the internationally renowned academic biology journal, Journal of Cell Science, on September 15. The paper is named ¡°Volume regulation and shape bifurcation in the cell nucleus¡±. In this research the team used existing technology in the field of Cell Biology and Molecular Biology, microscopic analysis, and 3D image recreation technique to develop the mathematical model.

The cutting edge results presented in the paper are expected to advance research in various medical fields, such as cancer treatments, diseases related to aging, and degenerative hereditary diseases. Professor Kim commented that ¡°the paradigm shift in understanding biological phenomenon by employing approaches from Physics can help solve the current conundrums in biology. Furthermore, this finding is expected to identify the cell-level treatment for curing diseases that trouble mankind.¡±
