Posters of Minions, plastered all over Woo Dang Hall are a new sight that welcomes students as soon as they enter the Hall. Minions are plastered on the staircase, the elevator, and even on the vending machine. The sight of yellow cartoon characters on campus may seem absurd at first. But the Minions Project is an ambitious project launched by the Korea University Student Association (KUSA), Jieum, to improve the quality of elective Courses at Korea University (KU).

Despite the importance of elective courses in fostering well rounded individuals, major subjects have always been prioritized. Jieum announced on their Facebook Post that Minions played minor roles in the movies Despicable Me (2010) but gained popularity and adoration after they played a leading role in the movie The Minions (2015). “Just like Minions, we want to breathe new life in to the elective courses that has long been neglected.”

There are three main goals in the Minions Project. Reforming and expanding the core general studies courses as there has always been a severe shortage. Establishing a yearly quota to restrict senior students from taking all the physical education electives is also on the agenda. Due to KU’s system of allowing senior students to register first, freshmen and sophomores usually could not enroll in popular sports courses. Setting a clear curriculum for the Thinking and Expression classes is their last goal.
