On May 20, the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) held its International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) in Morocco, in which three Korea University (KU) students won the bronze medal. The three students worked together as “Team X” and competed with other 127 teams from different countries. As a reward, the three earned a prize money of 2250 dollars, an invitation to the head office of the International Business Machines (IBM) Corporation, and the opportunity to compete in next year’s ACM-ICPC World Final.

Students from internationally prominent universities, such as Harvard University and Tokyo University, participated in this world’s largest computer programming contest. Two other Korean teams from Seoul National University (SNU) and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) also took part. Despite such intensity, Team X was not discouraged. “We had participated in competitions held in Korea and undergone special education,” said Professor Jinyoung Choi (Computer Science and Engineering), the adviser of Team X.

Nevertheless, Korea still has unstable social foundation for the field of software (SW) and programming, compared to that of Information Technology (IT). The team’s accomplishment was thus meaningful in demonstrating the superiority of Korean students in SW, as well as establishing a foothold for the future SW in Korea.
