Korea University (KU) will create a program that teaches about the basics of starting a business for refugees in North Korea, officially the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).

Since last September, KU has been preparing and organizing such program for the defectors. It has also signed a contract with the foundation of J.P. Morgan, an American multinational banking and financial services holding company, last December agreeing to provide a business startup program every year to 100 DPRK refugees so that they could settle down in South Korea hopefully by starting businesses.

This program comprises the following: education of the theory and reality of starting a business, business startup workshops, contest of business project documents, mini-talks by business founders, career fairs, and education of basic IT and English.

The 100 DPRK refugees who have been selected in the admission process during April and May will participate in the first program that will start off from mid-June at KU. The participants who have completed each program will receive a certificate of honor from KU.

KU has perceived the problems DPRK refugees are facing right now as problems that the unified Korea of the future will face. Hence, it concluded that in order to minimize future turmoil due to unification and maximize the effect of unification, Korea should help the defectors adjust to the Korean society as effectively as possible.

KU President, Yum Jae Ho who has stressed the social responsibilities of a college, emphasized that ¡°By speaking out about the current problems of a society and playing a leading role in solving those problems, a college can win the trust of people.¡±

With these efforts in the way, assimilation into the Korean culture will take place in no time.
