From February 27 to April 12, Korea University (KU) museum is holding a private exhibition of Professor Jung Jong Mi (Art and Design). Titled Repose of Soul for Landscape and Women, this exhibition is the fourth of the KU Museum series, “Dedication to Women.” More than 80 pieces of her artworks are aligned, including famous works such as her reproduction of Yun Seon-Do’s poem Song of Fisherman, and the Five-colored Waterfall that is 40 meters long.

Particularly, her series “Women in History,” which include pieces depicting the lives of the gisaeng Hwang Jini and the prominent Korean female poet Heo Nanseolheon, expresses the lives of these influential women of Korean history through the beauty of paper. “Paper is similar to women,” said Professor Jung. “When it meets with water, it is tender yet strong, and the way it can roll up, fold, and be torn, yet endure all of them is like women’s catholicity,” she added.

For more than 30 years, Professor Jung has been studying the uniqueness of Korean color and paper, and has even founded the KU Color Research Institute. Being aware that traditional Korean art is disappearing, she portrays her love towards traditional Korean style in this exhibition. She also commented, “I believe that papers, and their colors, speak for the individual’s lives.” In hopes of reviving Korean art, and consoling and praising the great women of the past, this exhibition is waiting for KU students and non-KU visitors.

The exhibition is open from 10 A.M. to 5 P.M. at the lounge and the first basement of KU museum, and the Contemporary Artwork Gallery, which is on the third floor. Every Mondays and holidays are closed.
