On June 4, classes were cancelled and Koreancitizens were required to vote. Both the ruling party and the opposition partycould not definitely know the result of the local election as there were manyvariables affecting the vote. Well, the results of the vote count shows thatneither both parties won over each other dominantly. However, one thing surewas that many people thought that there should be changes to education, andmany experts expect that the Sewol incident led them to think so.

The Sewol tragedy gave sheer shock to Koreans,great enough to influence the election. Such a disaster happened about almosttwo months ago and yet, the case has not been investigated clearly enough. So,many Koreans have been requiring the government bodies to get to the bottom ofthe affair and to punish person who was in charge. Out of all, universitystudents are demanding more thorough investigations and precise punishments by makingdeclarations. 120 Korea University (KU) students have done so, as an instance,on June 5.

In depth, KU students asserted that the societyexcessively sought for profits and that the greed resulted in the expense of valuablelives as it was so within the Sewol incident. Looking at this, KU studentsdeclared that the extreme emphasis on profits has to stop. They also demandedthe truth for the incident. Before KU, Kyunghee University students too madethe declaration regarding the Sewol incident on May 12, and Seoul NationalUniversity (SNU) did it on June 2. Then, along with KU, several otheruniversities followed the same step and made the declaration.
