[NEWS] Economy Found in Robinson Crusoe

The Institute of British and American Studies of Korea University (KU) held its third lecture of this semester on May 13, 5 P.M. at the College of Liberal Arts. The lecturer was Researcher Bae Kyung Jin of the Institute and he delivered information about English literature by the topic, ¡°The Economy of Passions: Robinson Crusoe and His Religious Bookkeeping.¡±

Researcher Bae connected the story of Robinson Crusoe with economy implementing various examples. For instance, he described how Robinson had to produce materials according to his own needs in a desert island. Then, he explained the core principles of self-sufficient society and autarky in relation to the literature. The first approach was solely about the novel, but the lecture gradually spread out to the entire English and Western Literature.

This is the third turn of the lecture series that are regularly opened from semester to semester. The purpose of such lecture is to continue the research on ideology, literature, arts, history, and society of Britain and America. Furthermore, it pursues the goal of heightening the structural understandings in local characteristics of culture and discovering the novel research topics in British American literature tradition.

Previous lecture was performed by Researcher Jeon Bum Soo and Researcher Lee Seok Kwang on April 15 and April 30, respectively. The lecture series will continue forward until the end of the semester. ¡°The topic itself it really innovative and I hope to try the next lecture. I¡¯m sure it will be really helpful,¡± said You Seung Hee (¡¯13, Journalism and Mass Communication) in the interview.
