On November 6, the conference “How the 3/11 Fukushima Nuclear Incident
Affected Korea” took place in the legislature in Yeouido. This conference was organized by the Center for Japanese Studies of Korea University (KU) and by the leadership of Choi Jae Chun, a member of the National Assembly.
The Fukushima incident, which occurred in 2011, had many consequences for Japan in various aspects including political, economic, and social. It also shocked the rest of the world as it was tragic for the country. However, the affects of the problem are not limited to Japan. Korea, which is the closest neighboring country of Japan, also has to face some of the inevitable consequences of the accident. Therefore, this conference was set out to underline the problems and to look for appropriate solutions.
Assemblyman Choi and KU’s Center for Japanese Studies formed a team that has dedicated its time and effort in dealing with the various issues of the Fukushima event. Some of the specific topics they deal with are the “Revival of Humanity” and “Safety in Nuclear Disaster.” By sharing their concerns, the conference hopes to find ways to deal with the results of the disaster.
“I believe that this conference deals with a very important matter in Korea. Although most people seemed to have forgotten, the aftereffects of Fukushima are very grave and they affect all of us in social, environmental, and economic ways. Therefore, I think that this conference is significant in that it reminds Korean society of the seriousness of the nuclear accidents,” said Lee Eui Hyung (’12, Psychology).
