On coming back to school, students at Korea University (KU) were frustrated as the course registration change period was shortened to one week instead of the usual two weeks. This change in the university’s system was well notified to the students. However, as the course drop system was yet to be reinstated, the right of students to freely navigate their courses was violated. “How are we supposed to determine if the courses are suitable for us within five days?” questioned Choi Na Un (‘13 Statistics)

The administrative department abolished the drop system last year. KU staff sought to compensate for the loss by lengthening the change period to two weeks. Despite good intentions, KU students preferred the original drop system as the two-week-long course registration change period created chaos in the beginning of the semester. Some professors expressed concerns as they could not fully begin their lectures for the two weeks.

KU’s Student Association (KUSA), Jieum, worked relentlessly last semester to bring the original drop system back. Their efforts were rewarded and the school promised to reinstate the drop system. However, the drop system was to be revived next year not this year. The school also shortened the course registration change period to one week due to complaints from both students and the faculty. Due to the mismatch of the two systems, students at KU have to bear the burden.
