As of September 2015, Korea University (KU) decided upon opening Flipped Class for five lectures in Anam Campus and four in Sejong. The program was enacted in the school¡¯s regulations in January by KU Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL).

Flipped Class is a newly introduced instructional strategy where students watch online lectures and collaborate in discussions through Blackboard, KU¡¯s online learning management system. Meanwhile, during off-line classes, students engage in advanced discussions and further practices, along with the assistance of their instructor. Namely, the traditional educational system is reversed, or flipped, by delivering instructional contents outside the classroom, and bringing in activities originally considered as homework.

Flipped Class aims to maximize the learning effect of students by putting the central focus of a lesson and the primary subject regarding the acquisition of information from the professor to students. Through this program, students are expected to utilize self-directed online learning system anywhere at any time, and apply the acquired knowledge in a creative and intensified way.

Nevertheless, some have expressed concerns, in that this method may put burden on students unable to gain access to computers outside school environment. Lack of promotion was posed as another drawback. ¡°I registered for a class without even acknowledging that it was a flipped class,¡± said Park Hye Jin (¡¯14, Economics). Yet, this semester being the first one to initiate this program, its effects require some time to remain to be seen.
