On April 13, Jan Eliasson, Deputy Secretary-General for United Nations (UN), visited Korea University (KU) to give a lecture titled ¡°The New Global Landscape: Challenges for the United Nations and its Member States.¡± The event was held in the Global Conference Hall, located in the first basement floor of Centennial Memorial SAMSUNG Hall.

Some of the key points of his lecture were issues which Eliasson thought were new or important to the world. He mentioned seven points, and they were: new geopolitical landscape, sustainability and future of humans, explosion of information, migration, urbanization, role of organized crimes, and the century of women.

Eliasson also commented on the reforms which he thought the UN should undergo. The first reform he mentioned was that the UN should ¡°think and work¡¦in the national and international scenes,¡± and he thus emphasized the organization¡¯s need to ¡°work more horizontally and less vertically.¡±

Another reform he considered to be crucial to UN was that the organization should be more serious about prevention he referred to in his speech. ¡°I feel in my job as a mediator like a fireman who comes after the fire has ended and picks up the pieces,¡± said Eliasson.

The speech ended with a Questions & Answers session, which was then followed by closing remarks by Anne Marie Sloth Carlsen, Director of United Nations Development Programme Seoul Policy Center (USPC).
