On March 26, Professor Lee Hoe Sung (Graduate School of Energy Environment Policy and Technology) of Korea University (KU) was recommended by the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) as candidate for Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). This is the first time Korean has ever been selected, and Professor Lee will be competing with three other registered candidates, from Europe and the United States (U.S.). The election will be held on October in Croatia, and the elected will become the sixth Chair of IPCC.

IPCC, under the United Nations (UN), is one of the leading international bodies that assesses climate change. Currently, there are a total of 195 member states, which proves that IPCC plays a pivotal role in providing clear scientific views of the environment. The newly elected Chair will remain in term of office until the year 2022, and will be establishing a new IPCC report. Professor Lee has been working in IPCC for more than 20 years, and is now working as Vice-Chair in this intergovernmental body.

With only seven months left, he holds firm ambitions. ¡°My aim is to further promote the IPCC report into social economic fields, based on my knowledge of economics,¡± said Professor Lee. He also added that the IPCC report will act as a bridge between the developing countries and the developed ones, and thus contribute to a global agreement.
