On September 3 at 5:00 P.M., Seongnimhoe, a scholarship foundation established by professors of Korea University (KU), held a scholarship award ceremony at the Conference Hall of Inchon Memorial Hall. 45 KU students were awarded, with a total of 125,400,000 won granted in whole.

Seongnimhoe was established in 1970 by KU professors with the goal of fostering talented undergraduates and graduates. With 948 professors as members, it has now transformed into the largest scholarship foundation on campus. The scholarship is donated by these professors who deposit a certain amount of money from their wage, and produce around 40 scholarship holders every semester.

The ceremony was largely composed of 4 parts as follows: the opening, greetings from the president, presentation of scholarship certificates, and the oration addressed by a student representative. “Seongnimhoe holds its value in that it is a voluntary and autonomically operated foundation; the professors’ contributions were not at all mandatory,” started off Professor Ahn BubYeong (Law School), the current president of this association.

The most distinctive characteristic of Seongnimhoe in comparison with other scholarship foundation is found in the keen affection between the donors and receivers. “The scholarship symbolizes the love granted to students from professors; with it, we hope that students would find the meaning and purpose of their life by returning what they have benefited back to places in need,” said Choi YoungJin, head of KU’s Office of Development and External Affairs.
