Korea University's (KU) Mechanical Engineering research team announced that it invented an innovative real time filamentous fungi detecting system on 17, May. The research team, led by Professor Lee Byeong Yang (Mechanical Engineering)also added that this technology is expected to be helpful in preventing illnesses caused by indoor atmosphere such as asthma and allergies.

The most innovative feature of this technology is that it detects the amount of harmful fungi in the atmosphere “real time.” Prior to the invention of this system, it took three to five days on average to correctly detect fungi. In addition, the utilization of fungi detecting technology used to be expensive-certain amount of expertise and a high quality gene analyzing machine was required.

The new technology unveiled by KU does not require an expert to detect filamentous fungi. Anyone can easily use it and can be assisted in understanding the status and distribution of fungi through precise detecting results. The results can be accessed through computers or wireless technology devices.

“Certainly this is an innovative technology that can help everyone in their daily lives,” said Sim Jae Yun ('11, Business). The new technology, ever since its release is receiving much accolade not only from experts but also from people outside the mechanical engineering field as well.
