On September 7, an opening ceremony, celebrating the launching of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research Center, was held in Korea University’s (KU) Hass Square. The center, which is to conduct a long term AI research, is a part of the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning (MSIP) and the Institute for Information and Communications Technology Promotion’s (IITP) project. KU also constituted a consortium with seven different institutions to work on a project that aims to “invent core technologies and raise human resources that can accumulate and process intelligence.”

This project also aims to foster valuable human resources that are highly contributive in Research and Development (R&D) and are able to cooperate with other industries in order to carry out further research. The center will subsidize the research with 800 million won annually for a maximum six years. While Professor Han Jae Ho will be in charge of the research, 12 professors from six different universities, 14 researchers from both small and medium sized firms, three cooperation-focused professors, and 41 undergraduate researchers will be a part of this project.

Through the project, researchers are planning to develop a Short Wave (SW) core technology that can process information ranging from AI, brain engineering, and linguistics. Professor Han announced that his goal was to “develop autonomous navigation intelligence and practical medical assistance service technology.” He also added that he will “do all that it takes to foster specialized human resources that can bring successful results in the field of AI.”
