On March 2, 2:00 PM, Korea University (KU) held a ceremony celebrating the establishment of the Department of Psychology as an independent department in the KU Auditorium, Kim Yang-Hyun hall. Announcing the department¡¯s new start as independent institute, the event reflected on the direction of future education and the path of the field of psychology in the perspectives of educators, entrepreneurs, and psychologists.

Psychology has traditionally been considered a branch of humanities. However, with social psychology and cultural psychology being closer to liberal arts, and cognitive psychology and neuropsychology expanding into natural sciences, it has been difficult to limit the academic nature of psychology. With this transition, students majoring in psychology will be able to obtain a bachelor's degree in natural sciences as well as liberal arts.

By switching to an independent department, the curriculum has also been reorganized in various ways. The curriculum of the Department of Psychology features flexibility, connectivity, professionalism and expandability. Students will study in various areas of artificial intelligence (AI), diversity, sustainability, and communication, to face challenges in future society. The curriculum that centered on traditional academic systems was dismantled, and was reorganized around innovative social themes such as Mind &Machine, Schema & Scale, Creativity & Culture, Wisdom & Wellbeing, Learning & Link.

"Today, our society is experiencing increased uncertainty and new social problems due to rapid social change and internationalization. Psychology is a multi-disciplinary, detailed study of natural sciences, social sciences, and humanistic approaches, on a common basis of scientific methodology to understand human experience. By maximizing psychology's strengths, we will provide a curriculum to foster convergent thinking and creative problem solving,¡± stated Professor Yang Eun-joo (Department of Psychology). With its new start as an independent department, the Department of Psychology is certain to cultivate students with a new sense of creativity and competence.
