On November 27, a seminar on effective ways of studying humanities, ¡°Studying Humanities¡± was held at the Central Plaza. Hosted by the Korea University (KU) Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL), the seminar focused on teaching students ways to attain a deeper understanding of humanities and issues discussed in the field. It also encouraged students to go beyond mere memorization, and meticulously investigate a certain topic of interest.

The speaker, Professor Shim Gyeong Ho (Department of Classical Chinese), developed his lecture on the 3M(mind, method, map) concept. In order to truly understand humanities and be successful, he explained that one has to have a deep understanding of humanities field (mind), a concrete method of applicating humanities in real life (method), and awareness of one¡¯s position and role in the society (map). To be successful, the three factors that constitute 3M must all be clear and concrete. Mentioning King Jeong-jo as a person with a strong mind but weak method, he asserted that any of the missing factors are detrimental to success, just like how his weak method led to his own death.

Shim ended his lecture by stating that KU students have a responsibility to study humanities and gain understanding of the society. He hopes that his lecture will serve as an inspiration for students to study with a different attitude. The lecture was taped so that students who were not able to participate can have a chance to enjoy the seminar.
