On April 5, KU-KIEP-SBS EU Centre hosted a special lecture on ¡®The Danish Strategy towards EU and EMU¡¯ in International Studies Hall at Korea University (KU). The lecture was addressed by Finn Laursen, Honorary Professor at the University of Southern Denmark. Co-organised by KU-KIEP-SBS EU Centre, Jean Monnet Networks NERAR Project and Nordic-Benelux Centre with the support of Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Korea Office and European Commission, the event included Mr. Toben Nielsen, Innovation & Research Counsellor of Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Denmark.

Professor Laursen started off the lecture by presenting a brief history of Denmark¡¯s association with European Union (EU) and discussed changes in Danish people¡¯s attitude towards EU throughout its history. He admitted growing momentum of the EU-skeptical parties and organizations but highlighted a recent poll that indicated that Denmark¡¯s support for EU membership actually expanded ever since Brexit. The lecture was followed by a number of questions regarding the future of EU in the face of mounting threats from within and without, such as Brexit, the Eurozone crisis, and the Syrian migration.

Finn Laursen is a Danish political scientist whose research has focused on European integration, especially in regards to the making of EU and its reform policies, as well as the union¡¯s role in the international society. He has received Jean Monnet Chair, a prestigious post awarded by EU to honor outstanding work in European Politics.
