 세상에서 가장 낭만적인 노래 중 하나로 꼽히는 The Lady in Red의 주인공
Chris De Burgh는 아르헨티나 출신 영국 뮤지션이다.
1986년 말 The Lady in Red의 히트로 영미권에 이름을 알리기 시작했지만
그는 1974년부터 꾸준히 상당한 수준의 음반들을 만들어오고 있었다.
그의 음반들은 대부분 잘 알려지진 않았지만 열어보면 하나하나 매우 훌륭한 완성도를 보여주는 보물창고와 같다.
더벅머리의 촌스럽게 생긴 아저씨가 들려주는 순수하며 아름다운 음악들의 향연은
전자음향들이 난무하는 시대의 리스너들에게 신선한 충격으로 다가온다.

 모든 앨범들이 훌륭하지만 오랜기간 활동을 해온 뮤지션인 그 역시 변화는 있었다.
초기의 서사적 구조를 가진 앨범들과 The Lady in Red로 대표되는 80년대 중반부터의 팝 사운드.

 그가 두 번째로 발표한 이 앨범 Spanish Train & Other Stories는 전자의 대표적인 예다
(우리에겐 The Girl With April in Her Eyes와 Old-Fashoned People로 잘 알려진
1979년 발표된 또 다른 걸작 Crusader 역시 이와 같은 구조를 가지고 있다).

 메인스트림과는 거리가 먼 상상의 이야기.
신과 악마의 포커게임으로 시작되는 이 순수한 영국 뮤지션의 이야기 열차는
때로는 격정적으로 때로는 슬프게 때로는 가슴시리도록 아름답게
끊임없이 굴곡을 그리며 레일을 따라 나아간다.
전곡이 모두 좋은 노래들이며 크리스마스 시즌에 라디오에서 종종 흘러나오는
A Spaceman Came Travelling과 깜찍한 사운드와 발칙한 가사의 조화가 돋보이는 Patricia The Stripper가 잘 알려진 편이다.

 데뷔 초라 그런지 덜 다듬어진 오케스트레이션이 아쉬운 풋풋한 사운드를 들려주지만 음악은 흠잡을데 없다.
비슷한 시기에 발표된 Carole King의 명반 Tapestry와 비교해봐도
1975년에 발표된 앨범이 맞나 싶을 정도로 그의 음악적 상상력은 시대를 뛰어넘은 것이었으며
21세기 소년소녀들의 감성을 적시기에도 충분히 매혹적이다.

 그는 갈수록 다양해지고 미래화 되어가는 복잡해진 음악들 속에서
‘단순하게 좋은 음악’을 찾는 이에게 오아시스와 같은 존재다.
그저 머리를 비우고 레코드 숍에서 Chris De Burgh의 이름이 있는
아무 앨범을 고르는 단순한 일만 하면 그런 음악적 갈증은 씻은 듯 사라질 것.
현재 예순이 넘은 나이에도 꾸준히 창작활동을 하고 있으며 몇 년 전 'The Storyman Tour'를
성공적으로 마치고 올 가을 신보 Moonfleet이 발매된다.
