On May 27, Korea University (KU) hosted a special lecture titled International Dispute Settlement and Adjudication, delivered by Professor Paik Jin-Hyun—former President of the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea. The lecture outlined various means of dispute resolution, from direct negotiation and mediation to legal adjudication through institutions like the International Court of Justice. Professor Paik emphasized that while adjudication offers binding outcomes and protects smaller states from power imbalances, it also carries unpredictability and less flexibility than other diplomatic methods. Drawing on high-profile cases like the South China Sea, Crimea, and the Chagos Archipelago, he illustrated the limitations of legal proceedings in complex, politically charged contexts.
In an interview with The Granite Tower (GT), Professor Paik shared, ¡°This was an opportunity to offer insights that go beyond textbooks—I hope students gained a unique perspective.¡± Acknowledging that international law can feel abstract, he aimed to break down international legal processes to make them more approachable. He added, ¡°I highly value moments of discussion with students and having exchanges with the next generation.¡± As international tensions and maritime challenges grow, Professor Paik¡¯s lecture reinforced the crucial role of robust legal frameworks and the engagement of future generations, providing an enlightening experience for those who attended.
