Peeping Inside the Dongwon Global Leadership Hall

Kwon, Yonggeun

With the removal of the Faculty & Women Student¡¯s Hall, the Dongwon Global Leadership Hall was established to preserve the goals set for Korea University¡¯s (KU) 100th Anniversary in becoming a ¡°Global KU,¡± nurturing leaders of the 21st century. The newly constructed building, built next to the Haesong Law Library, is three stories above ground and one story below. Interested in finding out what¡¯s in store for the students at KU? Well, you¡¯re just about to find out.

Global Leader¡¯s Lounge for Women (GLLW)
Located on the first floor of Dongwon Hall, GLLW, also known as Dodeulmaru, is an exclusive, girls-only area for female students to take their sweet siestas, watch TV, or use computers to surf the web. Adjacent to GLLW are the exercise, resting, nursing, powder, changing, and showering rooms, which are (again) only open to female students. Make yourself at home and reap the exclusive benefits that men cannot.

Korea University Center for Gender Equality (KUCGE)
Having trouble with your boyfriend? Needing advice on sex? KUCGE is the perfect place for you to request counseling for your worries. The center¡¯s main purposes are to receive and process reports of sexual abuse or assault, provide legal and medical counseling on sex, advice on issues regarding opposite-sex relationships, and foster a culture that promotes gender equality. KUCGE also provides help and support to students who are interested in learning more about conception and contraception, how to deal with sexual harassment or discrimination, and other sex-related issues that may happen anywhere in society.

Global Leadership Development Center (GLDC)
Always wondering where your friend gets information on internship opportunities? Well, no need to worry about that anymore. Just take a stroll to the second floor of Dongwon Hall and stop by GLDC, a relatively new establishment of KU, attempting to aid students in meeting the challenges of the 21st century. This center¡¯s main goals include creating opportunities for students to attend lectures and seminars, training workshops, community service programs, and internships both in Korea and abroad. The programs and system were benchmarked from similar ones at Harvard University, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and George Washington University, so you can be sure that you will receive professionally planned guidance and education once you step through those doors.

International Cafe
An International Cafe was created on the second floor to encourage students to improve their communicative skills with others. The center will be hosting various programs and events to boost the enthusiasm and fun. Programs change every month and include editing and writing, daily conversation, intercultural activities, study skills, roundtable discussions, socialization and global manners, English board games, job-seeking skills, and special events (workshops for women and board game contests), coordinated by professors from the Institute of Foreign Language Studies. ¡°It¡¯s at the developing level, so the programs still need improvement,¡± said Lee, Jin Wook (03, Architectural Engineering). ¡°I wish there were more programs to choose from, but overall, I am enjoying the small-sized classes.¡±

Strict rules have been set to ensure that the Cafe provides maximum efficiency. But remember, the seats are limited, so making a reservation at least three days in advance is necessary. Students are eligible to make a reservation for a maximum of 4 hours a week and attend a maximum of 4 different programs per week.
