On July 15, Korea University (KU) and SK Telecom finalized a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to establish metaverse-based campus infrastructure focused on connectivity and convergence. This understanding marks the construction of a metaverse-based campus environment, involving Internet of Things (IoT) smart energy campus, 5G, Cloud, and other messaging services. KU's approaches for digital transformation are also changing the expectations of the much-anticipated annual Ko-Yon Games.

In this year's Ko-Yon Games, KU attempts to utilize metaverse-based services to promote a new cheering culture in light of the period concerning the coronavirus disease (COVID-19). Despite the audience participating online, the benefit of the metaverse technologies will enable avatars of students and alums to continue to cheer in the festivities. In sum, the university is aiming to form diversity in interactions and create valuable contact-free experiences.

Beyond the Ko-Yon Games, KU will extend its digital efforts in both academic and extracurricular activities within the university. According to KU's communications team, the university has announced plans to implement the metaverse into lessons requiring practical experiments and student-oriented clubs, international activities, and volunteer work. In regards to these plans, KU President Chung Jin-Taek highlighted that "For the first time in Korea, we want to introduce an entire metaverse campus as a living lab to collect, analyze, and utilize the data generated to promote digital innovation."
