As June approaches, Korea University (KU) is concluding its spring semester and preparing for the 2026 summer semester. While many KU students take summer courses to advance their studies, they are often met with a limited choice of major courses. This lack of major courses is particularly great within the College of Liberal Arts, as several departments decided not to open major courses in the 2026 summer semester, whereas every department in the College of Science has at least one major course open, as found on the course registration website.

The lack of courses in the College of Liberal Arts has been a recurring trend. In both the 2025 winter and summer semesters, KU Business School (KUBS) offered around 12 major courses, whereas five departments in the College of Liberal Arts consistently opened none. Though KUBS draws international students globally because of its popularity and high global rankings in business schools, the difference in size of the department alone does not fully explain this disparity. For instance, the Department of English Language and Literature has a substantial population of 120 students, yet fails to offer winter and summer courses. Although course planning begins with student surveys in April, final decisions by May solely rest with individual departments, often sidelining actual student demand in favor of departmental discretion. Ultimately, this raises a critical question about the right to learn truly guaranteed for humanities students.
