On May 20, a former judge of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Chung Chang-Ho, visited Korea University (KU) to deliver a special lecture on international criminal law. Judge Chung has specialized in criminal jurisdiction and emphasized the importance of Chapter VII of the United Nations (UN) Charter, as well as national sovereignty, in resolving international disputes. He shared that South Korea should actively participate in shaping international law to strengthen its position as a global stakeholder. The lecture attracted KU students interested in diplomacy and the future role of international organizations worldwide today.
During the lecture, The Granite Tower (GT) asked whether there are specific criteria differentiating superficial human rights efforts from genuine ones. Judge Chung responded that ICC carefully evaluates whether national policies align with international standards while balancing sovereignty and the authority of Security Council resolutions. He also highlighted that KU has long played a leading role in the legal field, and he hopes KU will also take the lead in the field of international law. Judge Chung expressed gratitude to KU for inviting him to deliver a special lecture and encouraged students to continue pursuing their goals in the field of international studies.
