A research team led by Korea University (KU) Professor Lee Jong-Tae (School of Health Policy and Management) has found that people with disabilities are significantly more vulnerable to the health impacts of climate change. Published in *The Lancet Planetary Health*, the study shows that individuals with disabilities, who make up about 16 percent of the global population, face a higher risk of hospitalization due to cardiovascular disease in both extreme heat and cold environments compared to non-disabled populations. The research identifies direct risks such as increased exposure to climate disasters, physiological vulnerability and limited access to emergency resources. In addition to these immediate threats, it highlights indirect risks, such as unstable food and water supplies, displacement and reduced access to healthcare.

The study also highlights the lack of integrated data linking environmental, healthcare, and disability information in existing research. To address this, the team proposed building a comprehensive database and a structured classification system covering physical, cognitive, mental, and sensory disabilities. Researchers further warn that some climate policies, such as quiet electric vehicles or expanded bicycle infrastructure, may unintentionally create new barriers. Emphasizing equality, Dr. Kim Sera, part of the research team, calls for inclusive policy design, noting that people with disabilities contribute least to climate change but face its greatest consequences.
