Korea University (KU) will establish the Department of Global Korea Fusion and  recruit freshmen in 2022. Along with the currently existing Division of International Studies, KU is planning to organize the College of International Studies in order to produce global leaders with great understanding of Korean culture and history. The department will receive mainly foreign students, with a quota of only five domestic students. The department plans to deal with liberal arts such as history, language and culture, as well as social sciences such as economics, business, and media studies. This establishment will be the first trial to teach Koreanology by incorporating both social sciences and liberal arts.
KU explained that the major courses will be offered in both Korean and English. Students who pass the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) and achieve the required standards can follow the Korean curriculum as well. KU is also currently recruiting professionals in the field of social sciences, mainly in the department of Korean politics and international relations, and Korean media. Existing professors will also participate in various courses. As such, the novel department is expected to cultivate competent leaders who will be performing in various fields as experts in Koreanology and enhance the education and study of the discipline internationally.
