Introduction of AAC and CommA, Provided by Enactus

By Moon Sun (smoon1212@korea.ac.kr)

Korea University Enactus club, a global network of college students that aim to change the world through business, launched a Communication Able project (CommA) starting from last semester. The project aims to introduce the public to diverse methods that could potentially help people with language disorders. It mainly focuses on introducing Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) system that aids those with communicational disorders to conversate comfortably with others, using diverse electronic devices and tools as a medium. These tools are usually consisted of pictures and typed letters that they can point to, when communicating.

Despite the diverse number of methods that exist, such programs are not widely known to public. Enactus considers such situation as a result of indifference towards people with language disorders, which is the virtual reason why Enactus started the CommA. ¡°Though it may not look so critical, communication is one of the most fundamental part of living in a society. Therefore, we wanted to contribute in making the world where people with language disorders can engage in communication more easily,¡± the Enactus members asserted.

They mainly focused on implementing AAC in public places such as libraries and convenience stores. They currently have implemented AAC in seven convenience stores in Korea University and two stores outside school. They asserted that they are willing to expand their project to other places in school, stating that ¡°CommA will keep on working for time to come when the disabled and non-disabled can co-exist on an equal ground.¡±
