On March 23, the leader of Justice Party, Sim Sang Jung, gave a lecture on “Candlelight Protest and Transfer of Government” at College of Education Building #1 of Korea University (KU). Hosted by Justice Party-KU Student Committee, Student Council of College of Education and College of Political Science and Economics, the lecture was held as a part of Sim’s series of college lectures, with KU being the fourth college to visit.

Kim Hyun Woo (’15, Sociology), the chairperson of Justice Party-KU Student Committee, started off the event, mentioning the tragedy of Sewol ferry incident during the Park Geun-hye administration and the power of candlelight vigils in bringing changes within the society. Sim, as the presidential candidate for the upcoming 19th presidential election, shared concerns with KU students regarding the political problems still lingering after the impeachment of Park. During the question-and-answer session, she also carefully dealt with the students’ inquiries on issues ranging from university corporatization, high tuition fee, conscription system, to labor problems.

Emphasizing the role of college students in initiating political reforms, Sim stated, “You are the generation of rich experience. You have experienced the reality that is full of absurdities, and you dragged it down. You are the most progressive and reformative generation of all times. For the good of everyone, political reforms must accompany the participation of younger generation. If political changes are made without the young, it goes against the spirit of the age.”
