Many factors confer risk to childrens healthy development and adult outcomes, such as poverty, parental depression, parental substance abuse, divorce, and domestic violence, but the ual orientation of their parents is not among them. Many studies have assessed the developmental and psychosocial outcomes of children whose parents are gay or lesbian and note that a familys social and economic resources and the strength of the relationships among members of the family are far more important variables than parental gender or ual orientation in affecting childrens development and well-being.
Children raised by gay and lesbian parents did not systematically differ from other children in emotional/behavioral functioning, ual orientation, experiences of stigmatization, gender role behavior, or cognitive functioning.

On the basis of this comprehensive review of the literature regarding the development and adjustment of children whose parents are the same gender, as well as the existing evidence for the legal, social, and health benefits of marriage to children, the AAP concludes that it is in the best interests of children that they be able to partake in the security of permanent nurturing and care that comes with the civil marriage of their parents, without regard to their parents gender or ual orientation.
Marriage equality can help reduce social stigma faced by lesbian and gay parents and their children, thereby enhancing social stability, acceptance, and support. Children who are raised by married parents benefit from the social and legal status that civil marriage conveys to their parents. :
