On June 10, Korea University (KU) Emergency Central Steering Committee issued a declaration on the state of affairs at People’s Square. Students took the stage to voice their views, after which all participants marched across the campus. As South Korea faces intense national and international scrutiny over a major ballot shortage affecting more than 90 polling stations nationwide, a number of students across the country have expressed deep concerns regarding the legitimacy of democracy. With approximately 18 universities across South Korea scheduled to hold declaration events this week, KU is actively participating in this historic movement. This declaration also carries significant weight as KU students speak out and share their concerns and issue a direct call to action on the government, not just through campus wall posters.

To get authentic insight from KU students, The Granite Tower (GT) interviewed Kim Dowoo (‘25, English Language and Literature), the president of the Department of English Language and Literature. Participating in the declaration as a student representative, Kim stated, “Regardless of political stance, KU students are actively voicing their own insightful opinions here, at People’s Square.” He added that this event provides a place where students can recall the spirit of righteous resilience passed down by our alumni, who courageously faced tanks at the Main Gate. KU in particular holds historical weight: from the Japanese colonial period to the present, KU has safeguarded national sovereignty and a democracy in Korea. This declaration will also leave a meaningful footprint in the history of South Korea’s ongoing journey toward a resilient democracy.
