============

Hello, this is KU Student Union Emergency Committee.

We would like to provide an update following our meetings with the Institute for General Education and the College of Engineering regarding the course registration for the freshmen.

1. <Institute for General Education> About ACADEMIC ENGLISH
¡¤ Following discussions with the Institute for General Education, each ACADEMIC ENGLISH I class has been expanded from the original capacity of 18 (20) to 25 students.
¡¤ Additional classes have also been established for students retaking the course or those who have not passed it before, including one foundation level ACADEMIC ENGLISH I class (Z4), one intermediate level ACADEMIC ENGLISH I class (Z2), and four intermediate level ACADEMIC ENGLISH II classes (Z1, Z3, Z5, Z6).
¡¤ The above expansions and new classes will be reflected from today¡¯s course add/drop onwards and are open for enrollment. We encourage your active participation.
¡¤ A similar number of classes as in the first semester are planned to be offered in the second semester.

2. <College of Engineering> About Lab Classes
¡¤ The lack of lab classes experienced by certain departments such as Department of Integrative Energy Engineering and Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering has been addressed through the expansion of certain lab courses such as Basic Engineering Virtual Lab.
¡¤ Departments that previously had insufficient lab classes compared to the number of freshmen have lifted restrictions. Those measures have been developed in cooperation with each department to prevent further issues during the course add/drop period.

3. <Institute for General Education> About SW Programming Basics
¡¤ We wish to address and correct some misinformation from our previous communication regarding the availability and enrollment caps of SW Programming Basics course. Upon review, it appears there was a misunderstanding derived from our last survey announcement.
¡¤ After reviewing feedback from a survey conducted last December, it has become clear that this course has been scheduled for second-year students in some departments, according to their updated academic plans. This means that the number of classes for the SW Programming Basics course is currently adequate, and there are enough spots for students. If you could not sign up for the course this semester, you will have another chance in the future.
¡¤ In the College of Life Sciences & Biotechnology, there's a clash between this course and other first-year recommended courses, often exceeding credit limits, making first-semester enrollment difficult. This issue, also present in many engineering departments, has led to a consensus on deferring coding courses until after the first year. Despite this, the Institute for General Education has opened classes for first-year Life Sciences students to maintain choice in curriculum planning. Solutions for those exceeding credit limits, such as additional classes in summer or the second semester, are being considered.

4. Regarding Future Course Registrations
¡¤ As the revised liberal arts curriculum was introduced for the first time, some confusion occurred during this semester's course registration. In response, the Student Union and the Institute for General Education have agreed to conduct meetings at least once or twice each semester, including during the course registration period.
¡¤ We sincerely thank the Institute for General Education for their cooperation and tireless efforts in preparing solutions, and we will continue to do our utmost to ensure the educational rights of our students.

Thank you.
