Korea University (KU) has signed a deal with telecommunications company SK Telecom (SKT) and Soonchunhyang University (SCH) to introduce a virtual campus in SKT’s famous 5G metaverse application, ifland. The goal is to boost KU’s momentum into the metaverse and advanced internet era, since it remained affected due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic and social distancing guidelines that limit the number of students that can stay in one area, especially inside campus.

The digital campus will include all the famous symbols, logos, and landmarks of KU, including SK Future Hall, Central Plaza, and Main Gate. It will also remain open for 24 hours and 365 days a year, allowing students to visit the school at all times simply by using their phones and laptops. Reflecting KU’s motto of creating “a well-connected community,” real-time communication between professors and students, as well as an interactive user interface (UI), will be implemented in the application. It is also expected to host various events, group assignments, university festivals, and both entrance and graduation ceremonies in the future.
