Korea University (KU) and Samsung Electronics have partnered up on January 17 to create a new undergraduate major called "Next Generation Telecommunications,” which will be launched in 2023. Reflecting the rapid rise in convergent hardware and software technology in recent years, the department will foster the advancement of South Korea's 6G satellite communications, Internet, and artificial intelligence (AI). As part of the deal, KU will select 30 students every year and Samsung Electronics will provide them with full-tuition scholarships, employment linkage, individual English education, connections to graduate school, and other school subsidies.

This is not the first time that KU has partnered with Samsung Electronics. The two have previously created the Department of Information Technology (IT) Convergence for graduate students back in 2009, which was later changed to an undergraduate program. In 2015, it was dissolved to create a new partnership between KU and LG Electronics, who had new plans of improving convergent development in line with cultivating talents in electronics and machinery. Now, under fresh agreements, KU strives for advancing both industry-level cooperation and becoming a research powerhouse by partnering with huge companies and government agencies.
