The Korea University - Korea Institute of Science and Technology (KU-KIST) Colloquium about bio-technology and industry was held this 29th, 5 P.M. The main theme of the colloquium was stapled as “Bio-industry: Korea’s Competitiveness in Developing Innovative Medicine”. The visiting lecturer had been Cho Chung Myung, the representative of Crystal-genomics corporation, and the location was room 320 of College of Medicine, named Choi Duk Gyeong Lecture Room.

The KU-KIST Colloquium is opened every Tuesday, 5 P.M, and the audience for the lecture is unlimited. Everyone with full interest can freely come and go, if seats are affordable. This week’s topic was arranged as bio-technology and medicine field of Korea and its prospects. Cho first elaborated the advancement and status quo of the medical field in great depth with a number of jargon, and concluded with applying the condition to Korea.

To shortly introduce the content, in this post-genomic era of medical development, the number of new medicine production exceeds that of patents Food and Drug Administration (FDA) provides. Moreover, with the discovery of Omics technology, scientists became able to find out disease-related-protein and this accelerated the speed of innovative medicine invention.

The resolution had been rather simple and to the point, compared with the introductory explanation. Cho emphasized that Korea is very much fit to finding the overall structure of protein with super computer, world best IT infrastructure, and available synchrotron radiation. With such abundant basis, Korea can enhance the overall concentration in bio-technology field, and would be able to be listed as one of the forefront nations, according to Cho.
