[NEWS] Former Ministers of MCST Sharing Future Prospects about Communication and Culture with KU

By Kim Sun Oh (sunoh93@korea.ac.kr)

On May 31, Korea University (KU) invited Lee O-Young and Choi Kwang-Sik, former ministers of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourisms (MCST) to have a lecture on ¡°Communication and Culture¡± at Battelle Research Building Grand Hall. The meeting, held by Korea University Research Center (KURC), lasted for more than three hours under the guidance of Professor Choi In-Chan (Industrial Management Engineering), the chairperson of the meeting.

The lecture was divided into two sessions, the first one by Lee and the other by Choi.  Lee mainly talked about Fourier¡¯s attraction pas-sionelle and universal gravitation. His speech was based on Newton and Fourier¡¯s gravitation model on the interaction between Humanities and Natural Science. Professor Choi opened a discussion session after the first lecture, and accordingly professors from different departments had chances to ask questions. With Lee¡¯s decent speech, the audience and Lee himself were so absorbed into the lecture that his speech lasted far longer than the intended schedule.

Choi, who is currently a professor at KU at the Department of Korean History, talked about the Korean Wave, so-called Hallyu. Beginning his speech with the history of the Korean Wave, he pointed out that the phenomenon, which was initially considered as a cultural phenomenon, has been developed into a profit opportunity. Choi, at the end, emphasized the importance of interaction between the culture and the industry.
