[NEWS] Professor Shin Sae Hyun Makes Great Achievement

By Kim Jae-Hyun (kjh95@korea.ac.kr)

Professor Shin Sae Hyun (Mechanical Engineering) was chosen as the scientific technician of this month. This award, hosted by the Ministry of Science, ICT, and Future Planning (MSIP), National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), and The Korea Economic Daily, acknowledged Professor Shin as the first Korean to combine mechanical engineering technology with the biological field. Not only did he invent a way to isolate human platelets from the whole blood, but also the skills to inspect the function of the platelets and their drug response within five minutes.

Platelets are essential to human body, as they initiate clots when one bleeds. However, they can be the cause of serious heart disease and brain cardiovascular disease in the excessive. In this sense, Professor Shin¡¯s groundbreaking discoveries will help in the early diagnosis of these fatal diseases. Furthermore, his challenge shows the bright future of Korea¡¯s medical device industry. Considering the fact that 90 percent of platelet diagnosing devices in Korea is foreign-manufactured, his technology is receiving acclaim from multiple fields of work.

Although it will take a few more years for this technology to be commercialized, once it does, it will surpass the current medical device and even enter foreign markets. ¡°I am not a scientist, but a scientific technician,¡± said Professor Shin. He added that, ¡°My dream is to integrate more of the medical ideas with the engineering skills in diverse fields.¡± He is currently doing further research on separating nanoparticles, which are even smaller than human platelets.
