When Artificial Intelligence (AI) causes harm to consumers, who should be held accountable? This pressing question brought together a gathering of experts at Korea University (KU) on May 12. The event, titled ¡°Artificial Intelligence and Civil Liability,¡± was jointly organized by KU¡¯s Data and Artificial Intelligence Law Research Center and Civil Law Research Center, and took place at the College of Law at noon.

Professor Sung Dae-kyu (Kangwon National University)  commenced the lecture with an examination of the topic ¡°Interpretative Discussions on Artificial Intelligence Liability in Germany.¡± Following this intervention, Professor Kim Ki-hwan (Chungnam National University) and Professor Kim Soo-jeong (Myongji University) led a relevant discussion among the participants. The seminar additionally also tackled other intriguing issues, such as product liability laws and compensation regulations in cases where consumers are adversely affected by AI malfunctions.

Professor Lee Sung-yeop (Graduate School of Management of Technology), Director of the Data and Artificial Intelligence Law Research Center, emphasized the significance of the event, highlighting the rising ubiquity of Chat GPT and the subsequent increase in potential civil disputes related to AI. Through this seminar, KU demonstrated its pioneering spirit by laying the groundwork for exploring legislative advancements in the constantly evolving field of AI.
