On June 27, Yeong Cheol Burger announced that it is going out of business. Whatever the reason for its closing was—there exists many theories—students expressed sadness as they looked back upon the times Yeong Cheol Burger and KU shared.

Lee Yeong Cheol, the owner of Yeong Cheol Burger was a friend. Initially selling 1000 won burgers from a handcart, he no matter what warmly greeted every student. For a long time, despite the prices of ingredients rising, Lee kept his burger prices constant so that students would not be burdened. He believed what is best for the KU students was best for him too.

Lee was a big part of the KU life. In the previous matriculation ceremonies, 10,000 Yeong Cheol burgers were ordered and given out to the freshmen and their parents. During the festival, a “Yeong Cheol Burger eating contest” was held and elicited excitement. Lee also donated over one hundred million won to KU scholarship, and a total of 51 students benefited from his kindness.

It is for these reasons that Lee and his burgers are being missed. “I am sorry. And thank you all,” is the last thing Lee said on Facebook. In response, students commented by saying that they are sorry, and shared stories of how Lee helped them overcome hardships. Although Lee cannot be seen at the Anam branch for a while, many await for his return.
